My name is Grace Kubus.  My appearance as a nine year old maybe small; but I’m doing what I can to make a large impression with a huge donation in memory of my sister.  My sister couldn’t be with us today, because of complications with this birth defect, CDH.  She is now among many CHERUBS in heaven.  When the National American Miss, crowned me as their State Cover Girl, and they asked me to donate my time for a community event; I felt there was nothing closer to my heart than my big sister. I’m reaching out to all my family and friends to help me at my bake sale. 

Along with my bake sale, my mom, Patricia Kubus, author of Amanda Helps Becky Say Farewell and Amanda Finds Kristy Alone, will be running a book signing event along side of me to help raise funds as well.

We will also be have available 50/50 tickets and basket chances.

What is CDH?

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) occurs in approximately 1 in every 2,500 births (1,600 cases in the U.S. each year).  The cause of CDH is not yet known.  The diaphragm is formed in the first trimester of pregnancy and controls the lungs' ability to inhale and exhale.  CDH occurs when the diaphragm fails to form or to close totally and an opening allows abdominal organs into the chest cavity.  This inhibits lung growth.  

Every patient diagnosed with CDH is different.  Survival rates depend on the types and number of organs involved in the herniation and the amount of lung tissue available.  There are many surgical procedures and complications that may or may not occur with each individual, including in utero surgery.

Roughly 50% of babies born with CDH do not survive.   Of the 50% that do survive, most will endure long hospital stays, feeding issues, asthma and other problems.  A few of the survivors suffer from severe long-term medical issues.

CHERUBS is the world's first, oldest, and largest CDH non-profit organization.  We are truly a grassroots organization - CDH families creating something out of nothing when there was no other CDH group, information and services in 1995.  CHERUBS was created to make sure that no family endures Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia without support or accurate information.  Our Board of Directors includes CDH parents, grandparents, survivors, nurses, doctors and the world's top CDH researchers. CHERUBS is run solely by volunteers and donations.  At CHERUBS, every CDH family has an opportunity to honor or remember our children while doing good to help others and work together as a CDH community. No other charity in the world has such a respected, educated or experienced group of leaders who care so much about the CDH community.

The philosophy of this story may seem very simple and practical; but for Michael T. Goskowski, it became a light that guided his life.

My Interview with Francis Goskowski, Author

of Three Essays and Three Revolutions

The following is a series of questions I had developed and presented to my cousin, Francis Goskowski.

As you can all imagine, I'm very excited and proud to have this opportunity to introduce him to all of my friends and followers.  This is his first published book, with another in production, as you will read below.

• What is your name and the title of your book?

My name is Francis Goskowski and my book is entitled Three Essays and Three Revolutions.

• What is one thing you think your readers would like to know about you?

I am a former college teacher and administrator.  My book, in a sense, does for the general public what I used to do for individual classes of students: it presents my thoughts on selected writings, focusing on the broad theme of each selection and the influence the theme has had in many places over time.  My hope is that the book will be not only interesting but also convincing. 

• When did you know that you wanted to become a writer or publish a book?

I have always been an avid reader, but because I have been interested in the interconnections among history, philosophy, and literature primarily, prior to doing any serious writing, I spent a long time assimilating great writers' ideas and points of view and thinking through the implications and consequences of their works. I really could not have written the book now in print any earlier.  I had to work through some eroneous assumptions and get myself out of many blind alleys before I could feel confident enough about my conclusions to commit them to writing.

• What are your strong points in your writing style or methods?

I wrote my book for the general public, not just for scholars or teachers. In so doing, I tried to keep the text relatively short because the average reader has a busy life, and I tried to make each chapter a self-contained unit that could be read and digested independently. When I edited the text, I did one chapter per day, taking no more than two hours even for the longest one; I think if the average reader can do the same, he or she will become familiar with the book's contents in less than a week.

• What are your favorite books to read?

There are only so many hours in a day, so I have to choose books carefully.  Most of the time I read classics that somehow I never got to in previous years or current studies that shed new light on important areas of inquiry.

• What are you reading right now?

I am reading Stendhal's The Red and the Black for about the third time.

• Do you have another book that you are working on and hasn't been submitted for publication? Tell about it.

I'm building a new book around five classic novels that, in my view, highlight themes and values each writer's national culture holds dear.  I'm pretty much finished with one chapter, devoted to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and its handling of characteristically American themes. The next chapter will concentrate on the French; that's why I'm tied up with Stendhal.  I still have the English, the Germans and the Russians waiting in the wings. Since my plate is so full and I'm now in the AARP contingent, I pray that Alzheimer's doesn't set in before I finish.

• What are your biggest obstacles to writing and how do you overcome them?

I have a tendency to fuss over diction, punctuation, sentence style, and so on at the expense of "forward progress."  As a result, an hour's labor sometimes yields only two or three passable sentences. I have to force myself to move more quickly and to trust that later review will clear up problems.

•  Please put a description of your book.

My book focuses on Martin Luther, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Karl Marx. I argue that they are responsible for the "big ideas" that have shped current thinking in religion, politics, and economics. I highlight one influential work of each thinker, showing how its revolutionary assertions provoked fierce opposition within the prevailing order but ultimately won acceptance in all circles. In discussing the profound and lasting impact each thinker has had, I pay particular attention to developments in America, concluding that this nation's endorsement of religious liberty, civic equality, and economic justice derives directly from Luther, Rousseau, and Marx.

Anyone who is curious about the relationship between ideas and events should find this book to his or her liking.

This children's book is a story of a little girl who becomes lost and scared in a shopping mall.  When she jumps into the elevator with panic, she presses all the buttons and gets herself stuck.  Amanda the angel comes to keep her company until help arrives.  During their meet, Amanda passes along some helpful information about what to do when you get lost.  A good story to read to your little ones to help talk about situations that might occur for them if and when they get lost.

Amanda Finds Kristy Alone

This is a very delightful Christian children's book. On one particular rainy day, Kristy and her mother go shopping for new school clothes. Kristy's mother gets side-tracked, and Kristy finds herself all alone and lost in the mall. She climbs into an elevator and is overcome by panic when the elevator gets stuck and loud alarms sound, which frighten Kristy. She falls to her knees in tears, and it is then that the beautiful and comforting angel, Amanda, comes to her side. Amanda comforts Kristy at a time she needs it the most and talks gently to her. She stays by her side until she is no longer needed, and Kristy can be reunited with her mother.
This e-book would be very appealing to any reader, but especially to children. The illustrations are beautiful and well drawn to depict the emotions that Kristy is feeling. I felt very connected to this story; it has a wonderful and original plot. I could truly feel what Kristy was feeling and felt the peace in my heart that the angel brought to Kristy. It was very well written, and I feel that children of all ages would come away with a sense of empowerment and a positive message. It is a great story that children will love and remember. The lessons learned are two-fold: 1) how to handle a situation when you are lost and alone, and 2) a person is really never alone for they are always comforted by angels and God watching over them. It is a small book that carries a huge message, "We get stuck, but we are never alone.""
